Firewise Activities
The Agoura Hills Fire Safe Council (AHFSC) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that depends upon volunteers to accomplish our mission.
To accomplish the objective of creating Agoura Hills Firewise Communities, the communities are required to annually complete volunteer activities focused on fire prevention and protection.
There are many skill sets that can be useful in our mission to protect our community, families, and property from wildfire, including, among others:
- Resident Structural Work – Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, you may spend hours preparing and protecting your home from fire. CLICK HERE to see examples of activities that qualify as Firewise activities.
- Resident Structural Work 3rd Party Payments – If you paid a 3rd Party to complete recommended home hardening residential structural work, each $31.80 spent is converted to one Volunteer Hour to help meet your Firewise Community goals. Please be sure to report this.
- Resident Yard Work – Hours that a homeowner or renter spends improving their yard against fire. CLICK HERE to see examples of activities that qualify as Firewise activities.
- Resident Yard Work 3rd Party Payments – If you paid a 3rd Party to complete recommended home hardening residential yard work, each $31.80 spent is converted to one Volunteer Hour to help meet your Firewise Community goals. Please be sure to report this.
- Home Assessor – For Home Assessments – CLICK HERE to see our Home Wildfire Assessment page that helps our homeowners identify areas where they can better protect their home and family. We work with partner agencies to do residence assessments, and are in the process of training additional Agoura Hills residents to help with this.
- Community Team Leader – Neighborhood and HOA leaders will interface between their group and AHFSC. Our programs will need to be communicated to the local organizations, and we need regular feedback from those organizations. This position is very important to our success!
- Community Events Participant – These can include organizing the annual AHFSC resident meeting, school speaking events for students or parents, organizing Chipper Days, attendance generation through handing out flyers and brochures, manning a table at local events, and other related activities.
- Communications Personnel – If you have writing skills you can help us write or edit newspaper and newsletter articles, as well as help with content writing for collateral pieces that are required. We can also use photographers in support of these articles.
- Fundraiser – In addition to soliciting donations from homeowners and businesses, grant writing is critical to our funding. We have found that many grants are simple to apply for, but some of the larger ones that we are beginning to apply for are more substantial and require real grant writing knowledge.
- IT Assistant – We have a WordPress website and use a number of plug-ins. We could really use someone that is comfortable giving us a couple of hours per month to assist in maintenance of the website. Additionally, we are run social media campaigns, using Next Door, Facebook, Instagram, etc. If you have these skills, we could use you.
- Board Member Activities – There is a significant amount of time that goes into running the AHFSC including regular board meetings and all the various activities required to run the AHFSC.
- Common Area Hours – HOA Management companies and Firewise Communities spend many hours each month maintaining the common areas of the Community. Many of these hours apply toward Firewise recognition. CLICK HERE to see examples of activities that qualify as Firewise activities.
- Common Area Work 3rd Party Payments – If your HOA or Firewise Community paid a 3rd Party to complete recommended Common Area defensible space work, each $31.80 spent is converted to one Volunteer Hour to help meet your Firewise Community goals. Please be sure to report this.
- Watch Video – Hours spent watching fire protection-related videos on our website count as Firewise volunteer hours. These hours are captured automatically.
- Read Documents – Hours spent reading fire protection-related documents count toward Firewise volunteer hours.
We appreciate any number of Firewise hours or activities that you can give us. Any and all volunteers are appreciated and welcome.
