Home Insurance Town Hall

Jeff Gorell and Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin – Home Insurance Event

On October 15, Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Gorell and Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin convened a town hall to discuss homeowner’s insurance and the threats posed by wildfire. They were joined by local professionals in the real estate industry, including realtor Rosemary Allison, mortgage broker John Mallett, and insurance broker Daniel Groff. Among the realities are homeowners who can no longer afford to live in the area because of the cost of insurance, buyers who cannot get insurance and therefore are using that as a contingency to back out of transactions, and mortgages that require a higher downpayment because the monthly cost of insurance is so much higher.

Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner and Ventura Fire Safe Council Executive Director Stephen Watson discussed several of the immediate and practical things you can do to make your home safer and more fire resilient, such as Home Ignition Zone Evaluations that are offered for free by the Resource Conservation District of Santa Monica Mountains. RCD-SMM is a state agency, and this free service is funded by a grant from CAL FIRE.
