May is know as the National Wildfire Awareness Month
It’s a time to focus on prevention and preparedness for wildfires, especially as warmer weather and drying vegetation increase the risk of wildfires. Every May we highlight the importance of being ready for potential wildfires and encourage individuals to take steps to protect themselves and their homes.
Why May?
May is often the start of the wildfire season, with the weather becoming warmer and vegetation beginning to dry out, increasing fire risks.
Focus on Prevention:
Wildfire Awareness Month emphasizes prevention measures like cleaning up debris around homes, ensuring proper maintenance of equipment, and following safe practices when engaging in activities that could spark a fire.
Preparedness:
The month also encourages individuals to develop emergency plans, have evacuation routes ready, and assemble a “go-bag” with essential supplies.
Importance in Los Angeles:
While California’s wildfire season traditionally peaks later in the year, the extended nature of the season due to climate change means it’s crucial to be prepared throughout the year, including in Los Angeles.
National vs. Local:
National Wildfire Awareness Month is a nationwide initiative, but many local communities also participate with their own awareness campaigns and preparedness events.
